Calling All Adventurers

For those travelers who want to make the most of their time in Provincetown discovering what makes this place so charming and unique, here are the top three attractions you absolutely can’t miss:

  • Experience the Breakwater Walk: Hike the mile-long rocky Provincetown Causeway (also referred to as the jetty) to the narrowest tip or hook of Provincetown, and all of Cape Cod. For extra adventure continue on to reach the Long Point Lighthouse.
  • Climb to the top of Pilgrim Monument: The 252-foot granite tower commemorates the Mayflower Pilgrims’ first landing in the New World in Provincetown, in November 1620 before they sailed on to Plymouth. Imagine their voyage while taking in sweeping views of Provincetown and the surrounding waters.
  • Embark on a Whale Watch: Can you imagine anything more breathtaking than getting up close and personal with these amazing sea creatures while enjoying a picturesque afternoon on the water? Whale watching boats leave from MacMillan Pier several times a day from Mid-May to Mid-October.

Where to Dip Your Toes in the Sand

Whether you want to spend a full day at the beach or a leisurely morning or afternoon wafting in the ocean air, Provincetown shorelines are waiting to awaken your senses. Provincetown beaches are some of the most coveted on the east coast, with many a part of the Cape Cod National Seashore including Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach. Sunsets at Herring Cove Beach are especially remarkable given their location on the southwestern edge of the Cape along Cape Cod Bay, facing inland. The beach is calm, expansive, and easy to access. Race Point Beach is located along the northern shore of the outer Cape meaning it’s less protected and offers more surf.

Many visitors head to nearby Provincetown Harbor to get a fulfilling glimpse of the water and walk along the shore. Others catch sight of the ocean and its sprawling vistas while cycling through miles of scenic beauty along the National Seashore Bike Trails. For those looking for a more relaxing way to enjoy our beaches, simply head upstairs, as The Mercury Hotel offers the largest rooftop sun deck in town with panoramic water views!

Arts & Culture Abound

Provincetown is all about creative expression and it has been for some time; in fact, it’s America’s oldest continuous art colony. For over a century, Provincetown has welcomed and nurtured artists, poets, writers, playwrights, and more to its community. From art schools to community theaters, to an extensive array of the art galleries and museums of today there is no shortage of inspiration and appreciation of the arts in Provincetown. Don’t miss a visit to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) to admire thousands of pieces from artists who have lived or worked in the area. For a quick tour of some of the town’s free outdoor art take a casual stroll through the Bob Gasoi Memorial Art Alley, a lively installation tucked away off of busy Commercial Street.

Provincetown is also home to world-class theater and entertainment and is often referred to as the hometown of modern American drama. The town contributed to the legacy of Tennessee Williams, Susan Glaspell, Eugene O’Neill, and many others. The highly regarded Provincetown Theater and Peregrine Theatre offer major professional productions. Countless other local venues draw well-known talent and serve up a wide range of performance art including drag shows, cabaret, live music, and more. No matter when you visit you’ll be able to take your pick from an eclectic mix of stage performances sure to enrich your stay and stimulate your senses.

Indulge in the Hustle and Bustle

A favorite pastime is grabbing a seat in front of Provincetown’s Town Hall and indulging in the age-old act of people watching, and nowhere is it better than Provincetown. Every day feels like a holiday with passerbyers dressed to the nines, in costume, drag, or simply (and confidently!) flaunting their tanned beach bodies. Spend your days walking popular Commercial Street or along Provincetown Harbor and soak in all the action while admiring the diverse mix of people and personalities on full display.

Pop in and out of our local boutique retail stores, and art galleries to admire the collections of our local shopkeepers and curators. Treat yourself to breakfast, lunch, or dinner at one of our delicious local restaurants. Everything tastes better in Provincetown and there’s something for everyone! One of our favorite dining destinations includes the Mews Restaurant and Cafe, home to delicious food, spectacular sunsets, and a laundry list of famous diners including everyone from Steven Tyler to Judy Garland. The Canteen is another go-to haunt with an expansive patio, a casual beachy vibe, and scenic water views. When it comes to cocktails we recommend heading to Local 186 for an El Diablo Margarita or grabbing a Bloody Mary at the iconic Lobster Pot restaurant. And you can’t forget about tea time. First-timers to Provincetown can’t miss the legendary Tea Dance at The Boatslip, Provincetown’s biggest outdoor LGBTQ-friendly dance party for nearly 50 years. OK so they don’t serve tea, but they’re always serving up a good time.
